The rise of the digital data economy
Cybera has unveiled a new service to provide data science training and tools to Albertans. The Data Science for Entrepreneurs initiative provides Alberta entrepreneurs, businesses, and social enterprises with free training workshops and access to data science expertise.
Funded by the Government of Alberta’s Community and Regional Economic Support (CARES) program, this initiative was developed to help Albertans take advantage of the booming digital data economy.
It is estimated that by 2020, 11.9 PB of data will be created every second. More and more, Alberta businesses and entrepreneurs are looking to tap into this mounting data to increase their own growth and productivity. However, getting started with data science, and identifying the tools required, can be time-consuming and intimidating for many startups and small-to-medium sized enterprises.
Where do entrepreneurs go to learn these skills?
Cybera’s Data Science for Entrepreneurs initiative aims to help tackle this challenge by offering training workshops to Alberta businesses, as well as one-on-one consultations with Cybera’s team of data experts.
“In the modern economy, data science skills and tools are necessary to compete on a global scale,” says David Chan, Data Scientist at Cybera. “Our goal is to help prepare Albertans to be more digitally literate, and actively use transformative digital tools.”
Learning and leveraging Cybera’s data science expertise
Since Fall 2018, Cybera has been working with startup and social innovator partners, including Roundhouse, Startup Edmonton, ATB Entrepreneur Centre and Startup Calgary, to offer introductory and more advanced workshops to Albertans. So far, participants have been educated on how to incorporate data science, machine learning and AI into their business planning and processes.
Cybera’s Data Science for Entrepreneurs initiative also offers free access to data science tools (such as hosted Jupyter and RStudio environments), as well as consultations with entrepreneurs on how to start their data science projects.
