An active voice in Alberta’s telecommunications community, Alyssa Moore, has been elected to the Advisory Council of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN). She is the first Albertan, and first member of Canada’s National Research and Education Network, to take on this role. Over the next three years, Alyssa will work with an elected team of industry professionals to help craft policies that keep the internet ticking.
ARIN is the not-for-profit organization responsible for managing and allocating internet addresses for Canada, the USA, and many Caribbean and North Atlantic islands. Its goal is to advance the fair use and continued growth of the internet.
To this end, ARIN’s Advisory Council plays a key role in creating policies that affect the development of the internet. Its 15 elected members ensure that proposed policies are clear, useful, and technically sound before they are recommended for adoption by ARIN.
Members of the Advisory Council also participate in community outreach efforts, helping media and internet users to understand how its underlying infrastructure and rules work.
Alyssa works as a Policy and Strategy Analyst at Cybera, Alberta’s not-for-profit technology organization responsible for driving Alberta’s economic growth through the use of digital technology. She is an advocate for affordable and accessible internet, and has testified before the CRTC on the need to open up internet access to all.
“We are delighted to see her take on this role, as it means Alberta will take a leading role in helping to shape the future of the internet,” says Barb Carra, Vice-President of Policy and Strategic Initiatives at Cybera. “We look forward to the knowledge-sharing and new insights she will impart to Canada and the global internet community.”
